Disappointing experience at Neighbourgood Ravenscraig.
I stayed while pregnant and called ahead before booking to ask which rooms were quieter and on the first floor. I was told the Superior Rooms were, so I paid extra. The listing also mentioned a balcony.
When we arrived, we were given a ground floor room next to the communal kitchen and living area, which was clearly the noisiest location in the house. There was no balcony, the view was of a white wall in the inner courtyard, and the bedside lamps mentioned in the listing were missing. There were also leaks from the sink and shower, and we saw rats in the courtyard which made us uncomfortable leaving the door open.
The room did not match the Superior room we paid for. I raised this with staff several times and was told they would follow up about either moving us or refunding the difference, but despite visiting reception three times and sending multiple messages, I was ignored.
The communal living area was nice, the cleaning staff were lovely, and the pool was great. It’s a shame because I had a positive stay with Neighbourgood in 2022, but after this experience and the lack of response to my complaint, I would not return.
After a two month stay I feel able to leave a fair review.
The positive is the location, lovely cleaning staff, car park and environment. If you are lucky you may end up in a house with lots of like minded digital nomads which creates a nice social atmosphere. However it is a little bit unpredictable.
Unfortunately I experienced several issues during my stay and despite raising them multiple times I was never offered compensation. I was offered a move to another property but it was described to me by another resident as more like a hostel which was not suitable.
Main issues during my stay:
1. RATS!!!
There appears to be a serious rat problem. On one occasion while we were eating at the table a rat jumped out of the kitchen bin and almost landed on my boyfriend’s shoulder. They are regularly spotted and a couple of us saw them drinking from the pool at night. We reported this to the in-house staff and another resident shared photos and/or videos with one of the Neighbourgood team, but nothing had changed a month later.
2. Security
Our balcony door lock was broken when we arrived, and we waited for 3 days to get it fixed, which left the room feeling very vulnerable.
3. Water and noise issues
For the first week or so there was an extremely loud drilling noise from the roof when the water system was not running. The temporary solution was turning the water off at night..
4. WiFi reliability
For a digital nomad property the WiFi was questionable. During my two month stay there were 2 working days where the internet was down or in and out.
5. Maintenance and condition
As others have mentioned, the property feels tired. There was some mould in my bathroom, and repairs often feel temporary E.g our bathroom door handle fell off multiple times, once leaving me locked inside.
To top it off the price was 30,900 rand per month (around £1,400 / €1,650 / $1,750). Once I had checked out, it was raised that there was also an accounting issue where one of my monthly payments did not appear to process. I was waiting for confirmation from my boyfriend’s bank, however there was a comment made that if it could not be located, the amount may be deducted from an employee’s salary felt quite unreasonable.
Of course, if it turned out there was a genuine payment error we would resolve it. But for a place charging these prices with 22 rooms, it was surprising to hear that staff could potentially be personally responsible for what is clearly not their fault.
I felt it was important to share my experience so others know what to expect
The place is well located and the team working there friendly and helpful. Trying to book, I got no reply to 3 different emails - which was frustrating. The place itself is a bit worn. The kitchen floor has lifted, there are no bins in the room and small things like that. Saying that, the rooms were clean and comfortable. It was still decent value for money and I would consider going back again
Ok, but not great. Room was spacious but quite run down, as was the shared kitchen. I had expected a co-living environment but did not find that there.
It’s a very convenient place to stay if you are running CT Marathon. The rooms are perfect and the people super helpful! Will definitely come back here. The restaurant near by was also super convenient
SCAM. Rooms dont look at all like on the pictures of the website(s). Feels like a scam, I was coming to see the room 3 days before I was supposed to move in. I tried to cancel and refund but they dont allow, even for 1 months booking worth of 2000 USD. Then they tried to rent out the same room a second time as I was not moving in.
UPDATE: there was no refund done at all, even though in this answer it states "refunded 2nd October" - its a LIE!
