DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!
I visited during high season. The rooftop was closed, the kitchen was closed, the outdoor seating area was bare, there was no free yoga and there were no community / social events.
The hostel sits between an extremely loud train line at the back of the building and a loud main road at the front of the building. My bed would shake when the train went past and I was often woken up at night by the sound of horns even though I had earplugs. The building overall has not been maintained to the standard you see online, it's falling apart. Some lights in the room could only be switched off at the electricity box mains by the door so if you wanted the lights off, all the power sockets would be turned off too. The bathroom is old, falling apart and smells. There is no control of water temperature, it's few degrees above cold water if you're lucky. The shower is a wet room and there are no bath matts so the water spills into the bedroom. The coworking space is dark with little lighting in the evenings, the chairs are unstable and broken and the power sockets do not all work. I originally booked for 3 weeks and knew immediately that I wanted to shorten my stay. I raised the issue with management immediately and was dragged out for over a week waiting for an answer on whether I could change length of the booking and get a refund. I was told that because I booked directly through them they were unable to do anything, which in any other establishment, would make reducing my stay easier not impossible. I was also told that a lot of other people had similar issues and were requesting refunds. No refunds were given.
During my stay of over a week, the room was not cleaned, the towels were not changed and no additional toilet paper was provided. I was not informed at check in that I would have to request this. In any other place, it would be done at least weekly.
I'm not sure how they got such a high review, but this place is a shambles and an absolute con for the price they charge. It's extremely neglected. There are so many other better places to stay in Weligama. Do not waste your money here!!!!
The only positive is that the staff are friendly.
I had a really great stay at Sugar Hostel in Weligama. The staff are extremely kind, always willing to help with anything you need, and if you stay for a few days, they become very friendly and welcoming. I originally booked 10 nights and ended up staying for the entire month, which says a lot about how comfortable I felt there.
One of the biggest highlights is having a coworking space inside the hostel with good and reliable internet. It makes it a perfect place for digital nomads or anyone needing to work while traveling.
As for things that could be improved, I think the rooftop is a bit underused. Simply adding some nice lighting would completely transform the space and make it much more enjoyable in the evenings.
Regarding the coworking area, I would suggest investing in better chairs and fixing the power outlets. Many of them either don’t work properly or can’t support the weight of chargers. Even adding extension cords could be a simple and effective solution.
In terms of security, fortunately, I didn’t experience any theft personally, but I did meet other guests who had money go missing. I would strongly recommend reminding guests to store valuables in the lockers. Speaking of lockers, some of them were broken and could definitely use repair.
Lastly, hot water was inconsistent during my stay, and I only had it available on a few days. Improving this would make the experience even better.
Overall, I had a wonderful time and would still recommend Sugar Hostel, especially for long stays and remote workers.
Serious security issue. MONEY STOLEN from room.
I stayed at this hostel and had 100,000 LKR stolen from my room. During my stay, staff entered my room multiple times without my consent.
When I later checked my belongings, the money was missing.
I raised this directly with the hostel and had to threaten police involvement to get the situation taken seriously.
This is a major breach of trust and safety. I would strongly advise future guests not to leave any valuables here.
Extremely disappointing experience.
The dirtiest place I have ever stayed in my life.
This hostel is absolutely disgusting. Rooms, common areas, bathrooms, everything is filthy.
There are insects everywhere, broken furniture, and a constant feeling of grime.
The so-called co-working area looks nothing like the photos. Chairs are broken, tables are damaged, and the space is unusable.
Nothing is maintained. Nothing is cleaned properly. The entire place feels neglected and run down.
This was one of the worst accommodation experiences I’ve ever had. I would not recommend this place to anyone
My friend was staying at this hostel while I was in Mirissa. She spoke very highly of it so I decided to join her. Ronnie was very welcoming and arranged for my friend and I to stay in the same room. The bed was comfy, the bathroom was clean, and the staff was very helpful. I had a bad experience with a tuk tuk driver the night before, but when I told the staff, the boys working there made sure to speak to the drivers I took, verifying that I could trust them. The hostel is also very conveniently located near all the good beach bars and restaurants
The hostel has a lot of potential, but in its current state it really doesn’t live up to it.
There are no real common areas and no organized activities, which makes it quite difficult to meet people. Considering that in Weligama there’s a different party every night, it would make a huge difference if the hostel actually promoted or supported any of them, but it doesn’t — there’s zero social engagement.
In my dorm, the bathroom door couldn’t be closed, which created a serious lack of privacy. One day I was taking a shower and someone from my room walked in and saw me naked. This issue was reported several times to the staff, but it was never fixed.
The staff is friendly, but honestly very disorganized. They often say that the hostel is fully booked, even when Hostelworld shows plenty of available beds. Check-in is extremely slow and confusing.
I stayed as a guest for six days, and when I came back just to use the co-working space (which is basically just a room with good Wi-Fi, nothing more), they still charged me for it — even though I had just spent almost a week there.
With all the hostels available in Weligama, I personally wouldn’t choose this one again. It could be so much better, but at the moment it’s just not worth it.
I've loved staying in this hostel, the staff has been incredibly helpful from the moment I walked in and has always been available if I had any request or problem.
The position is perfect, it's in the main street where you can find plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops, gyms and of course surf schools (the hostel also collaborates with one so you can have fair discounted prices).
Inside there's a really nice coworking space with AC, a shared kitchen and a cozy rooftop.
I've really liked the private room, spacious, always clean and from the shared terrace you can see the ocean!
So in conclusion I'm very happy with my stay and I'd recommend this hostel to everyone visiting Weligama.
A special mention to Tutu who made me feel like I was at home!
I stayed here for almost a week and really felt at home. The whole team, especially wimu, tutu and angela were always there to help and make us feel like home.
We had some fun nights there. Additionally, the coworking space was a really good place to focus.
