Our rooms shower drain was clogged and we had no paper towels during my whole visit (despite multiple times visiting the front desk who were always less than happy to help), the restaurant shut down indefinitely with no explanation or compensation. The beach is beautiful and central to the Tulum hotel strip which was nice.
WARNING! We arrived at the hotel in Tulum, which marketed itself as a healthy lifestyle hotel offering yoga and other wellness activities. However, upon arrival, the hotel was filled with partying youth, with excessive drinking, loud music, and drug use. Our room was poorly soundproofed, so the music was just as loud inside as it was outside. The room was very dirty, with burn marks on the sheets.
When we spoke to the reception, they said this is simply how the hotel operates. They cut off our wristbands and asked us to leave the premises. We quickly had to book another hotel and relocate.
The following day, I spoke with the hotel manager, who promised to compensate us for the unused nights. We provided our details, but nothing happened in the following month. We reminded them, and they promised once again to reimburse us.
After six months, I contacted Selina's Chief Financial Officer, Barbara Zubiria, who guaranteed a refund soon. Now, two years later, despite repeated reminders, we still have not received any compensation from them.
If you’re paying the $60-120 USD x night range that they offer with shared rooms and bathroom you will probably be fine. I paid almost $1,000. USD for a 4 night stay in a beach view room, and the gap between the price paid vs the service and quality is a lot. To summarize:
Room sliding door didn’t close all the way through. They offer to change my room, but we rather deal with the inconvenience of A/C loss and mosquitoes entering the room vs having to pack, unpack to pack again when ready to leave
Construction workers making sexual comments to my wife when walking from the room to the lobby
Different information given from the front desk staff vs the rental company when Renting an ATV
Different information given when checking in upon including breakfast in my reservation from the front desk staff vs the restaurant employees.
Beach reclining chairs broken
Butter knife at the breakfast restaurant was dirty and with mold
There is no hot water
Multiple power outages throughout the stay
Closet doors dirty/dusty
Other than that, Great location
Stayed 23-27 September at room A5
My Wife and I spent our honeymoon here at Selina Tulum it was Beautiful affordable place to relax on the beach.
The water is fabulously warm and clean.
Close to places with music and good food.
Rooms: 5 | Service: 5 | Location: 5
Rooms: Rooms and bathrooms ok - clean.
The air conditioning works very well
Safety: There is 24-hour security in the hotel itself.
On the street, safely, within the resort limits.
Food & drinks: Very tasty breakfasts with a sea view.
Noteworthy details: It's best to travel by rented car to see a little more than what the offices offer.
Watch out for speed bumps, which are plentiful and often difficult to see, especially at night. And of course, holes are sometimes very dangerous.
Hotel highlights: Quiet, Great value
There is a DJ that plays from 3:00pm to 8:00pm so you can hear the bass playing from inside your bedroom but I didn’t care about it too much. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Definitely will be coming back!
I liked the all female room. It was clean and spacious. The location is fantastic and right on the beach, but I was there to work in the co-working space, and I didn’t like the coworling room. I have been to other Selina hostels and the coworking space was much better. The AC wasn’t working when I was there and there were only 2 private rooms to work, and the WiFi was a bit spotty.
This is one of the worst hostels I have ever stayed in. There was a cockroach in the bathroom the first night I was there, the room never gets cleaned and the water from the shower comes out salty is weird. The staff are really rude, I asked the receptionist if I could have a bottom bunk bed and he said they couldn't assign me one and that they were all taken when it was a lie. Both nights I stayed there were a couple of bottom beds available. The beach is nice but the area is ridiculously expensive, you are better off staying in town as the prices are a lot lower and coming to the hotel zone for the beach.
The staff are terribly unpleasant.
I was asked to pay for the booking on arrival for this Caribbean beachfront hotel with sea view. Only after I had paid did the hostess inform me that neither the bar nor the restaurant were open during my stay due to building work, and that if I wanted breakfast or a cocktail I would have to cross the road, walk 5 minutes to some hotel that was not on the seafront.
No discount was offered, until I shouted like a skunk for 30 minutes (20% in the end).
It's not just unfair, it's a scam, pure and simple.
The room wasn't bad otherwise.
If you're not keen on this kind of surprise, get the hell out!
