Our 25 day stay at Acougo was honestly not great as Black Americans. We had an uncomfortable interaction with Noelia regarding us being unable to assist with set up/prep for an event of hers due to genuine miscommunication. As a result, she rudely called us out in a group chat of 60+ people for not coming to help pull together an event she did not adequately prepare for and was scrambling to pull together on the day of/did not properly coordinate for despite our attempts prior. The host, in her guilt, was unable to let it go, further ostracizing us as the only black, queer individuals in the space by repeatedly and publicly apologizing at said event and then constantly asking if we were okay/happy in the space following and pressuring us for explanations when we did not want to participate in the following events, both privately and in front of others.
We decided to shorten our 2 month stay by 1 month and Noelia shared that information with others in the coliving space promptly. We were then continuously questioned about our private reservation change moving forward by multiple residents that had witnessed the previous uncomfortable/rude interaction, which made us more uncomfortable. As someone hosting women it is not good practice to share private reservation information with virtual strangers who would not have had access to our information otherwise. It was really unprofessional and she never apologized for violating our privacy or acknowledged it. Still.
This is not including several other ignorant behaviors that made us uncomfortable: a hand gesture imitating our ancestors being hung in an uncomfortable conversation about slavery that her and her husband initiated, trying to engage us in conversation about how upset she was that her son called the new Peruvian student at school “n***o”(a racial slur based on skin tone), continuously using dark skin emojis when neither her nor her husband are anything of the sort (fully white European), wearing a historically black cultural/protective hairstyle and insisting our hair is the same unprovoked and repeatedly (I have locs and am fully African American), her husband asking us what we knew about the Bronx (I’m from New York) and “gangsters/gang banging” even though I repeatedly told him over the course of the month that I am not from there/unfamiliar, etc.
We were fully willing to chalk this up to small town ignorance but consistent, overt micro-aggressions like these, however unconscious, are hurtful and uncomfortable. Especially from people who claim to be so inclusive and culturally aware and are trying to get people of all kinds to move to their town.
And yet, Noelia is still trying to defend their actions/business instead of just acknowledging these things they were clearly ignorant of and making a conscious effort to do better moving forward. Of course no one else that has stayed there has had these issues, we are the first Black Americans! Most of their guests are white/from Spain. Just take accountability instead of trying to argue/debunk our genuine experience and do better moving forward, truly. The response of Acougo to these very real experiences says it all.
(Writing this review here because the owner had it removed from Airbnb) BLACK AND BROWN GUESTS BEWARE. I stayed here in October 2025 and had a poor experience due to racist aggressions from both hosts. Every time we interacted with the hosts, my partner and I had to brave some new challenge, from the host constantly asking us about “gangs” and crime simply because we are black people to using black emojis and wearing our cultural styles to name just a few. The location is in the middle of nowhere and if not for the scenic mountain views it would drive someone crazy. There are church bells that ring every few minutes, that sometimes last for 5 minutes at a time. There is no reliable transportation out of the town you are staying in and you will have to be reliant on the hosts to transport you anywhere if you need food or want to see anything besides the small town. There aren’t many walkable trails that are easy to access unless you want to walk for hours (not exaggerating) just to get to an actual mountain. Adding pictures to affirm did in fact stay here.
Again great scenery, just very prejudiced hosts with little access to the outside world.
I’m very grateful to have connected with Acougo de Pitasana. This space weaves together a beautiful combination of accommodation and community. I highly recommend for short or long term stays. It has been great to be connected to the Pitasana farm nearby, a wonderful source of organic vegetables. There is also an abundance of hiking right at the doorstep and the ocean is a short drive away.
My experience at Acougo de Pitasana was truly exceptional. The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented, but what made it unforgettable were the people. The hosts, Noelia and Pablo, were kind, attentive, and genuinely caring, creating a warm connection not only with me but among all the guests. The service was diligent and heartfelt, the atmosphere full of good energy and friendly smiles. Even the village itself radiates hospitality — everyone makes you feel at home. A beautiful place to enjoy authentic cuisine and authentic human connection in a splendid region.
The time I spent in Acougo will always hold a very special place in my heart. It's a beautiful house, steeped in history, with a huge industrial kitchen where cooking every day was a true pleasure. Plus, being able to enjoy fresh, seasonal vegetables from Pablo and Noelia's Pitasana garden was a luxury. Having a comfortable room with a private bathroom and my own office also allowed me to have my moments of peace and quiet.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the garden, exploring the forest and parks, and participating in the workshops Noelia organized.
I recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway surrounded by nature, good energy, and a sense of community.
Acougo was a wonderful experience. I felt incredibly cared for by Noe, and it was a perfect way to get to know Boal and find a space for myself and my creativity.
We stayed for a few days and it was a very positive experience. The location is in a beautiful, mountainous, and green area, offering some very interesting excursions, both in the mountains and close to the coast.
The accommodation has everything you need, the common areas are luxurious, the kitchen is fully stocked, and the friendly people we met were very pleasant.
The hosts, Natalia and Pablo, were wonderful.
Acougo de Pitasana welcomes you very well. 😉
A fantastic meeting place and highly recommended.
We will definitely return.
Thank you.
