Great crowd and volunteers, but overbooked lodge and aggressive upselling
Overall impression: A basic hostel with an amazing community vibe and helpful volunteers, but heavily brought down by run-down facilities, chaotic communication, and highly questionable rental and kite-school practices.
My Travel SituationTravel Reason: Solo traveler / Kitesurfer looking for a short stay in the West Algarve.
Accessibility: Rather difficult to reach without a rental car or scooter, although a supermarket and the next town are within walking distance.
Storage: They provided safe storage for my private kite equipment, which was a plus.
Booking & Accommodation Quality was Communication Chaos: The initial inquiry email went to spam. Subsequent WhatsApp communication involved constantly changing contacts, forcing me to repeat my request multiple times.
The Rooms: I initially requested a single room, but due to chaotic booking, I was forced into a 6-bed dorm without a chance to check it first. The bunk bed was extremely squeaky, and the mattress was so worn out that I slept directly on the frame. There were no power outlets at the bed and zero privacy curtains.
Facilities & Overbooking: The small house felt completely overbooked with regular guests and campers, all sharing just one fridge and a ground-floor toilet. The place is very basic and heavily worn out—peeling paint on furniture, worn-out armchairs, broken toilet seats, clogged drains, and dirty bathtubs instead of proper showers. Cleaning did not happen daily.
After the first night, I luckily moved to a single room on the first floor due to an unexpected departure. However, there is no A/C in the building, and the heat builds up heavily upstairs. Even worse, there was an exposed live wire right outside my window that sparked from short circuits.
The Kite School, Rentals & UpsellingKite Lessons at Alvor Lagoon: The lodge pushes daily paid packages like SUP, yoga, or kite lessons. On a nearly windless day, the instructor, Kirk, pushed through with the lesson at Alvor Lagoon anyway. While they claim it is "voluntary," it is incredibly tough for a traveler without local knowledge to judge the conditions. Other students made zero progress and felt there was no room to communicate their frustration.
I was offered a larger rental kite to join the class session but was forced to pay for a 3-hour minimum rental. After two hours of waiting around for wind, I realized it was useless and walked back. Instead of understanding, Kirk immediately lectured me. At checkout, they refused to adjust the bill to actual usage, hiding behind their T&Cs and claiming I "ignored warnings."
Atmosphere & Staff (the real Vibe): The only reason I still had a good time was the incredible company of the other guests and the young, friendly volunteers who handled most of the daily operations. Actual management/staff were barely present.
My Conclusion: i cannot recommend this place for a targeted kite trip. The "Lodge" lives off good marketing, but the physical state of the house doesn't even live up to a basic 2-star standard. The aggressive push to sell beds and lock guests into rigid material rentals feels very sketchy. If you want a good kite experience in Portugal, book a professional kite school and get a separate, clean accommodation elsewhere.
What a place! An amazing vibe, a must-stop destination with beautiful beaches and plenty of activities to enjoy. The lagoon for kitesurfing is simply unbeatable. Thanks! I will be back!!
Oceans Spirit Lodge in Burgau is just next-level awesome! 🌊 The spot is perfect – tucked away in nature but still super close to the beach and that cute little village. The outdoor space? Absolutely gorgeous. Great vibes, chill corners, perfect for winding down after a day full of action.

Such a lovely spot in the south of Portugal with breathtaking beaches all around. The daily kite lessons are a great way to enjoy the sea and improve your skills. The vibe is super relaxed, and the friendly staff make you feel right at home. Definitely a place to unwind and have fun!
A place where you can feel yourself. Friendship and kindness seems to be part of the natural rules of the camp. The villa is really pleasent, rooms are very nice, beakfast is special and the courtyard is a paradise! Just go there, learn how to surf and kite and enjoy!
Ocean Spirits Lodge in Burgau, Portugal, is a fantastic place to learn how to kite. The vibe is super chill and welcoming – not a party hostel, but perfect for a relaxed, social atmosphere. They host fun events like pizza nights, which are a great way to meet other guests.
The daily kite classes are excellent. The equipment is top-notch, and the instructors are friendly, professional, and make you feel completely safe. I made great progress and can’t wait to come back! I also loved the yoga classes out in nature and the really cool SUP tour in Lagos – both were amazing add-ons to the experience. Great value for the price, especially for solo travelers – everything felt easy and hassle-free.
The staff are incredibly friendly and make you feel at home from the moment you arrive. Burgau itself is a charming little town with a peaceful atmosphere. There are plenty of hiking trails, good restaurants, and a beautiful beach nearby. Plus, it’s just a short drive to Sagres and Lagos if you want to explore further.
Can’t recommend this place enough – I’ll definitely be returning!
I love this place and will definitely come back. The location is beautiful, the people are nice and the activities are so much fun. The hikes around Burgau are beautiful. The kite lessons were a lot of fun. It is the perfect blend of a relaxing retreat, action and social interaction with like-minded people. If you want to, you can meet a lot of international people. I especially recommend it for solo traveling people that want to meet new people and learn a new skill. My personal highlight was the pancakes in the mornings.
All in all, for me it was the perfect vacation.
We stayed for a week and booked the kite and surf package. The trip was a success! Great lessons, beautiful place to stay and full of lovely people.
